As a long-time fan of the Old 97's (I can still remember seeing Rhett playing for change on the streets of Deep Ellum in the 1990's,) I find their latest release to be another great winner. It's also fun to see that they got to work with Pete Buck of R.E.M. fame, and it's always admirable when a star works with their fans.

First, congratulations to Tex Hammond for the cover art. Ken Bethea and Phil Peeples do a great job throughout. I enjoyed both of Murry Hammond's songs and hope he performs "By the End of the Night" in concert. "Incantation" is a new-style breakup song that is haunting. I envision those in newly ended relationships playing "Incantation" on repeat. I enjoyed the Spanish guitar piece, "Estuviera Cayendo". My favorite song was "Where the Road Goes". On the downside, the background was too loud on the first three tracks, not overpowering the vocals, but out of balance.

Old 97’s song writing remains on point with American Primitive. If you’re a long time fan or new to their sound, American Primitive sits comfortably in the wheelhouse of Old 97’s material. Highly recommend this latest release and catching a live performance of the upcoming tour.

American Primitive places itself among the best the 97's have ever offered. Could have been the second or fifth release. No stopping the band from persueing what has always been their calling card to the Alt-Country fox that other bands have sought to copy and memoralize. Hard core fans will be place back in time, new converts rewarded. Stay together guys, album 50 might even keep the loyal faithful for all the effortless product produced here. Buy and play it LOUD!

I love this cd. It dose not have a bad track on it. And it has some really great songs on it. The Old 97's are a really cool band. I been with them from the start. I have all of their stuff. And when they come to Louisville my hometown. I go see the boy's.
