King Gizzard are the rock and roll masters of spaghetti western radio theater! 'Eyes Like the Sky' is an album-length, hard boiled western story set to music. The album tells the tale of the title character, a child of U.S. settlers kidnapped and raised as an Apache warrior. My favorite track is 'Fort Whipple,' where King Gizzard's instrumental tone poem underlying the spoken word is bluesy but at the same time expansive and bright, like the rolling prairie itself, tracking the boy's time spent learning the song of the six gun after being recaptured by American soldiers and an evil missionary. Sit back and let the movie play out in your mind's eye while you listen! All the nuts and bolts stuff about the vinyl is as good as a young Blue's aim with a repeating rifle - delicious colored wax, original album art on the inner sleeve, a thoughtful poly protective outer sleeve instead of that aggravating shrink wrap. The spoken word is performed by Broderick Smith, Ambrose's dad and inspired by the initial experiment of 'Sam Cherry's Last Shot' on 12 Bar Bruise. Yessss, pardner!
