A fever dream in sonic form, St. Paul & The Broken Bones’ new album The Alien Coast marks the most adventurous and original output yet from an ever-evolving musical powerhouse. In a profound shift for the Alabama-bred eight-piece—the band’s fourth full-length strays far from the time-bending soul of past work like their 2014 debut, arriving at a dizzying convergence of rock & roll and R&B, psychedelia and stoner metal, gospel and jazz-funk. At turns explosive, elegant, and thrillingly unhinged, that sound makes for a majestic backdrop to St. Paul & The Broken Bones’ visceral exploration of the strangest dimensions of the human psyche.
Produced by Matt Ross-Spang (Drive-By Truckers, Margo Price, Cut Worms), The Alien Coast is the first album St. Paul & The Broken Bones have ever recorded in their hometown of Birmingham. In creating the ultra-vivid dreamscape threaded throughout The Alien Coast, the band’s chief lyricist drew inspiration from such disparate sources as Greek mythology, dystopian sci-fi, 17th century Italian sculpture, and colonial-period history books.

SP&BB are an incredibly talented group of musicians. Paul Janeway has the ability to convey an incredible range of emotion in his singing, and this is what continues to make them relevant. The packaging and pressing of the limited edition Ghost vinyl is spot on, and the signed postcard and download cards are a nice plus. The record is a delight to see spinning on my turntable. The evolution musically of SP&BB is an interesting one, and "Alien Coast" is quite a departure from their first two records, stylistically and instrumentally, and only slightly closer to their last release. The album overall has a darkness, that unlike their first album, with "Grass is Greener," has a less soulful aspect, and more Cowboy Junkies vibe, i.e. depressing. While the songs are well crafted, the energy seems more subdued than previous releases. The instrumentation on the record is more electronic and less "organic" with the horns being mostly absent. It's an interesting listen, but not my favorite release of theirs.

St. Paul doesn’t disappoint. They continue to evolve and continue to push the edge. A little disappointing that it clocks in at just over 35 minutes but in those few minutes they can set a mood. The vinyl sounds great and the look is a fantastic addition to anyones vinyl library. Can’t wait to see them in Austin come April.

Another amazing album. The vinyl looks cool and the autograph card is an amazing bonus. The music is what shines the most as these guys continue to make awesome transformations in their music making journey.

Fantastic pressing. This album sounds great. Packaging is beautiful. Solid recording. This is a very interesting band - that you'll struggle to place in a singular genre. Paul Janeway is one of the most talented vocalists you'll ever hear. The music can be ethereal and it can also get funky. A+
